5 tips to not miss the RED deadline of August 1st 2025

Although 1 August 2025 still seems a long way off, it’s a relatively short period of time to get started on a project to achieve compliance of a product. Even if you are still unsure about the testing strategy or if you are not yet sufficiently familiar with the laws and regulations, the associated standards and requirements. The advice is and remains: get started now! The following tips will help you on your way:

  • 1

Include the new RED articles in your risk assessment

Just like any part of the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), your compliance need is based on a risk assessment. Therefore, It’s important to extend your risk assessment for RED compliance with the new articles 3.3 (d) (e) and (f).

  • 2

Define the intended use of your products

In determining what standard(s) to use it is vital to understand what the intended use and environment of the products are. Industrial products for example, are tested according to IEC 62443, whereas IoT products are usually tested under ETSI EN 303 645 or the upcoming harmonized standard EN 18031.

  • 3

Prepare early by reviewing the requirements

When you know what standard will be used for testing, you can start mapping the requirements. Not all requirements may be applicable to your product. When reviewing the standards and their requirements, you will usually have to implement some changes to better secure your product and be ready for testing, during this period you can already start on the required documentation for testing.

When testing with Kiwa, we supply a format that is usually easier to work with than the one the standards provide. When sitting down with our experts feel free to ask us about our formats and how to use them. When a lot of help is required, we also provide guidance services where we explain the terms, definitions and required information for testing.

    Do a pilot

Most companies learn a lot during their first cybersecurity assessment, especially ones based on legislation. After a pilot project, many companies manage to better prepare their next products before the assessment and sometimes decide that testing their low-risk products can be done based on future harmonized standards.

    Roadmap your way to compliance

When completing a testing pilot you know the steps towards compliance for your product and you may already have a product ready for certification! This is the perfect moment to reflect on process and set deadlines when your product(s) will be ready before 1 August 2025.
