5 tips for smooth sailing in cybersecurity
Based on experience, we see some similarities among manufacturers who have gone smoothly through the testing and certification process:
- 1
A list of cyber requirements
In the design phase, it’s important to think about which requirements apply to the product and how they will be met. If you are not yet familiar with the content of the standard, talk to the Notified Body or another independent party in time and get yourself informed.
- 2
Having a dedicated expert
It’s important to have at least one dedicated expert available in the team. Someone who knows all about the product and also knows how cybersecurity is organized for that specific product. This is indispensable for a smooth turnaround of the process. If this person is also readily available to Kiwa's cybersecurity specialists, you can’t go wrong.

Standardized products
There are many advantages to thinking about standardizing products at the design stage. For example, less testing is needed because you have already been able to test certain aspects on the main product. Another advantage is that it often simplifies market access to countries in other parts of Europe.
- 4
Willingness to learn and adapt
Although cybersecurity is obviously something that has been around for a long time, it is still quite new to a surprising number of organizations, especially with all kinds of laws and regulations coming our way. This requires a willingness to invest in learning and adaptability. Let Kiwa help you out with e-learnings and guidance services.

Start early with testing
Start on time. This seems obvious one, but unfortunately we are currently seeing many manufacturers wait and see. If you are not yet ready for actual testing, try to build up sufficient knowledge in the meantime and at least get clear on which requirements apply and how you intend to meet them.
