Kiwa SCM launches electronic e-bike security certification

Every day, dozens of electric bicycles are stolen in the Netherlands. The high value and limited security of e-bikes make them attractive targets, even in enclosed spaces such as garages and sheds. In response to this, vehicle security specialist Kiwa SCM has launched the 'Electronic Security Systems for Two-Wheelers' certification mark, aimed at the independent certification of bicycle GPS tracking systems.

The certification mark is the result of collaboration between manufacturers, insurers, alarm centers and law enforcement agencies. Manufacturers seeking to certify their bicycle GPS tracker systems must meet two critical requirements. Firstly, the system must demonstrate in a practical test that it can trace stolen bicycles within 48 hours. Secondly, the bicycle GPS tracker must contain both long and short-range technology to track a stolen electric bicycle over long distances and to pinpoint its location accurately locally. The systems must not only meet mandatory European requirements but must also be tested under various weather conditions to ensure operation in all situations.

Database

Suppliers can register with Kiwa to initiate the certification process. After approval, the systems, along with the bicycles they are mounted on, can be registered in Kiwa's database. This database can be accessed by insurers to verify whether the bicycles they insure have a valid certificate and thus an approved bicycle GPS track & trace system.

Recognition scheme

Kiwa will approve systems that are standardly built into the factory as well as standalone transmitters that are sold aftermarket. A recognition scheme, to be introduced later, will determine what bicycle dealers need to do to register systems directly with Kiwa. As part of the certification mark, Kiwa aims to monitor bicycles with approved trackers and see if stolen two-wheelers actually return after reporting theft.

New security standard

With the certification mark, Kiwa aims to make a significant contribution to reducing e-bike thefts and set a new standard for the security of electric bicycles and other two-wheelers in the Netherlands. Kiwa's certification mark and specifications promise to be a significant step forward in this regard.
