The services of the Kiwa Italia Plastics Laboratory, accredited LAB No. 0001L by ACCREDIA, are aimed at plastics producers and processors and Quality Managers who wish to control the quality of the raw material, through the characterization of the polymer under test.
The Melt Flow Rate Determination test for plastic materials defines the Melt Flow Rate (MFI or MFR), which is a measure of viscosity that allows an estimate of the average molecular weight and also gives, an indication of flowability through dies or nozzles.
The Melt Flow rate is a characterization test, used in production and for Quality Control, for acceptance of the polymer granule at both inlet and outlet. Performing repeated MFR tests also allows us to derive much more information about material behavior, among them the thermal stability of the polymer, knowledge of which can be very useful during processing (molding, extrusion etc.) and fine-tuning of process conditions. For this reason, the test is a preliminary test during molding of the material.
