The testing comprises a number of important analytical parameters and this must include assessment for contamination, nutrient information (NPKMg), pH, Loss on Ignition (LOI), electrical conductivity, Carbon:Nitrogen ratio, Phytotoxic Elements, physical contaminants, textural classification using hydrometer (or pipette) method grading to BS ISO 11277 with a presentation of the textural relationship on a ternary diagram. As per the standard.
Many contractors and testing laboratories are simply unaware of the requirement to undertake contamination testing to BS 3882:2015 and thus risk putting potentially contaminated soil into highly sensitive developments.
Further to this, inadequate grading information is often presented as the vast majority do not carry out the correct procedure in order to assess the particle size distribution, this again, can lead to unsuitable classification and misclassification of the material, not least that it is not presented in line with the British Standard requirements.
Problems can be presented if the material is not suitably classified, handled and deposited. Such problems include poor drainage/flooding, poor turf uptake, die-back, physical harm, illness from chronic exposure, etc.
At Kiwa CMT we offer the complete service for Topsoil sampling, testing and assessment in accordance with BS 3882:2015.
