Trilab Australia: Celebrating 30 Years of Soil and Rock Testing Excellence

Trilab, a Kiwa Company, is celebrating 30 years of soil and rock testing excellence. The Kiwa company’s milestone achievement is in recognition of continuous accreditation by NATA – the National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia.

NATA is the national accreditation body recognised by government to assess organisations against a number of international standards for laboratories, inspection bodies, proficiency testing providers and reference material producers.

As a leading specialised soil and rock geomechanics testing supplier, Trilab services mining, exploration, engineering and infrastructure industries for clients located throughout the Asia Pacific region, and globally.

Trilab’s journey with NATA began in 1994 when it established its first laboratory in Brisbane, Australia. Since the company provides geomechanical testing solutions of civil construction material, it knew that confidence in asset integrity and infrastructure performance would be paramount.

The company approached NATA about gaining accreditation the laboratory after a NATA signatory with a previous employer highlighted the importance of gaining industry recognised quality assurance and accreditation for this new facility. The laboratory successfully achieved NATA accreditation for soil testing a year later in 1995.

Following on from the successful operations of the soils/rock laboratory, which has had scope additions over the years to include rock testing and further soil testing services, Trilab also became NATA accredited for calibration services in 2010. This accreditation was initially for the various laboratory testing equipment and metrology instruments used to service its own internal equipment, but as demand for Trilab’s technicians grew outside of its business, it decided to extend its calibration services to support commercial industry partners.

Growth in business and capability

As Trilab’s business grew from the booming resource exploration industry, it added a new NATA Accredited Perth laboratory in 2017 and acquired the Geochempet Services laboratory in 2019 to enhance it capability and expertise in geology and petrographic analysis.

When Trilab joined Kiwa, a global provider of Testing, Inspection, and Certification (TIC) with advanced testing laboratories of its own, Kiwa recognised the value of accreditation and championed the company’s ongoing involvement with NATA. For Kiwa, the accreditation provided an added layer of trust in Trilab’s products, services, processes, management systems, and employees.

Trilab attributes its ongoing commercial success to continuous professional and technical development, investment in new equipment and instrumentation, and most importantly, strict adherence to the testing methods defined by Australian standards, and ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) International procedures and processes – which are also backed by industry recognised and respected accreditation by NATA.

For Trilab, being accredited by NATA for three consecutive decades provides its clients with confidence in the accuracy and quality of its specialised testing and calibration services. Accreditation is also essential for the continuity of current projects with clients, while the quality-centric approach is valuable when new clients are looking at the company and considering using its services.

Trilab is proud of its 30 years of continuous accreditation with NATA. The achievement demonstrates its credibility and integrity in the mining, exploration, engineering and infrastructure industries both locally and internationally, and provides clients with confidence that they are partnering with a technically competent and capable company that is committed to efficient and accurate testing.
