Working at Kiwa: Robert Ernst

For the past eleven years, Laboratory Manager and Certified Concrete Technologist & Trainer Robert Ernst, has been a key contributor at Kiwa, taking on a variety of roles that align with his passions and interests. From testing building materials to training apprentices and leading the laboratory, he has continuously sought out opportunities that challenge and inspire him. “I try to do everything that interests me and brings me joy,” Robert shares, reflecting on his diverse responsibilities.

His work spans testing building materials for their components and properties, onboarding new employees, and training the next generation of apprentices. In addition, Robert has played a crucial role in structuring, digitizing, and optimizing the laboratory, ensuring efficient operations from order processing to project management. He also lends a hand in organizing events, such as the summer party, adding a personal touch to the company’s culture.

Fostering a Positive Work Environment

Robert places great importance on the well-being of his colleagues, believing that a positive working atmosphere is key to enjoying the job. “The employees are very important to me; without a good working atmosphere, it would be only half as fun!,” he explains. He is particularly passionate about special tests that push the boundaries of his knowledge in building materials, structures, and construction. These challenges keep his work engaging and rewarding. “Special tests that challenge me and spark my interest in building materials are also important to me,” he adds.

Diverse and Impactful Projects

Throughout his time at Kiwa, Robert has been involved in a wide array of intriguing projects. Notable examples include locating cracks in prestressed steel, developing and testing concrete for a nuclear power plant, evaluating thermal conductivity, and working with 3-ton concrete elements. 

Leading the Laboratory with Expertise

Robert has recently stepped into the role of leading the laboratory, marking a significant milestone in his career. His extensive background includes leadership training, certification as a concrete technologist, and expertise in training, craftsmanship, construction knowledge, personnel management, structural planning, and project management. This diverse skill set equips him to navigate the complexities of leading a team in a dynamic and evolving environment.
