Holcim Germany certified for CSC CO2 module by Kiwa as worldwide first

Kiwa recently certified the Holcim ready-mixed concrete plant in Mönchengladbach-Hardt according to the CSC CO2 module. Holcim Germany was the first company in the world to be certified according to this module, which can be issued only since January this year. The certification provides evidence for a profound reduction in concrete production CO2 emissions.

The CSC CO2 module is a supplementary certificate for concrete plants to their main CSC certificate. The three stars of the additional module mean that the manufactured concrete is produced with a certified 50% CO2 reduction compared to the reference value.

Concrete Sustainability Council

Kiwa is a founding member of CSC, the Concrete Sustainability Council. CSC promotes transparency about the concrete production process and value chain. In addition, the effects on social and ecological environment are made visible. CSC certification thus leads to a continuous increase in the sustainable management of the cement, raw materials and concrete industries.

“I am very pleased that we could hand over the certificate according to the CSC CO2 module to Holcim Germany after the relevant audits and checks”, says Martin Köhrer, Product Manager Kiwa Ecobility Experts and Auditor CSC at Kiwa Germany. “It’s a great example of more sustainable production methods. And it indicates that the concrete industry is really willing to change to reduce CO2 emissions.”

Just the beginning

All of Holcim’s German cement plants, nine aggregates production sites and 22 ready-mixed concrete plants, as well as the mobile concrete truck, have already received a CSC certificate.

“The Mönchengladbach plant is just the beginning”, adds Marc Holberg, Head of Ready-Mix Concrete at Holcim Germany. “We will continue to push sustainable construction with CSC certificates and further innovations in the coming months and years.”
