AR7030 Technical Measurements

Please note that the following measurements were performed on early 7030 receivers and do not reflect recent improvements. In particular, the IP3 is now typically +28 to +30 dBm across the AM BCB.

Kiwa has recently had the oppurtunity to measure several AR7030 receivers. We thought we would include these measurements as another source of information. The AR7030 has created considerable interest since it's release especially concerning the Third Order Intercept or IP3.

High Order IP3 measurements truly test the measurement system. Special care must be taken to insure that the measurement system does not create intermodulation in any form or else it will pollute the measurements.

The measurement system at Kiwa is suffienctly accurate to measure IP3 at these levels. The system was developed over a course of a year and it is modeled after a system developed by Dallas Lankford who often publishes his measurements and designs in the NRC-National Radio Club "DX News".

Conclusion

The AR7030 is an exceptional receiver all across the board. We were particularly impressed with the audio quality, the sync detector and how quiet the receiver performed. It truly has set a new standard in receiver performance.

The IP2 and IP3 measurements reveal that the receiver appears to have two sides. It has an extremely high Third Order Intercept or IP3 at 12 MHz and an extremely high Second Order Intercept or IP2 at 24 MHz. However, the IP2 and IP3 is reduced as one approaches the AM BCB band. This may be a problem in severe reception conditions. Kiwa offers an Input Filter Upgrade that will remedy this problem.

The phase noise measurements are the best we've seen for a synthesized receiver. However, we would like to point out that the best of the old tube receivers often had phase noise characteristics exceeding -160 dBc/Hz. Of course, the older tube gear also didn't have the IP2 and IP3 characteristics often found with todays receivers.
